Abacus has received a number of significant awards including: Early Years Wales “Setting of the Year”
Abacus virtual viewing – come and take a look around.
We encourage the children to be as independent as possible at Abacus. Daily they are involved in:
We teach the children about their natural world and sustainability and how the children can recycle. We teach the children about being respectful of nature on our trips to the park. We try and use natural items with all of the children as they are both sensory and spark their imagination and creativity as they have no set purpose e.g a block of wood can be a sandwich or a bridge! Our treasure baskets are especially popular with the babies.
We have strived to include lots of new things to support the children’s well-being, including yoga sessions. The children have yoga sessions with a professional yoga teacher every week, and staff complete yoga with the children throughout the week building on what they performed in their weekly sessions.
We have achieved our Gold Plus Snack Award, and Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Award. We have a four week rotational menu, which is prepared on site by our chef. We encourage the children to be involved in food preparation and they prepare and cut fruit and vegetables every day. The children are encouraged to have a go and take part in the full cooking process, measuring, weighing and chopping ingredients.
As we are based near to two local schools we complete our school runs with the children on foot and encourage the children to walk everywhere we go. This allows them to have some extra exercise, learn about road safety, and build up their appetite for meals. We also walk our children for outings to the park and local shops. The children enjoy walking as they get to explore and see the world differently.
Having an outside space is so important for the children’s development and at Abacus we have a grassed area and an all weather safety play surface so they can play each day. Like the indoor nursery the garden offers a myriad of carried activities from gardening to den building. We like to include loose parts within our outdoor space as they allow the children to be creative and free with their ideas.
Abacus is an established 43 place children’s day nursery started over 20 years ago by the current owner. Abacus has been awarded the “Early Years Setting of the Year” in 2019, a finalist in 2020 and achieved “Silver Small Workplace Health Award” 2020 amongst many others. We constantly innovate to explore new and enjoyable ways to develop children’s learning and development.
Abacus can offer Welsh language provision for those parents needing this service. Children who go on to start at Welsh medium schools can gain a head start before their first day at school. Research has shown that children exposed to more than one language at an early age, are better able to assimilate additional languages.

Children assimilate knowledge during these formative years more than at any other time. Therefore, the importance of quality care and education during these years is vital. The Abacus’ philosophy is a holistic, child-centred approach where children are encouraged to develop in a nurturing environment. Our objective is to lay the foundation that will enable your child to reach his or her full potential later in life.
The staff at Abacus take great pride in offering the best service that they can to the children. Whether it is planning a challenging activity for the children or giving a tired child a story and cuddle. As Abacus is a small nursery the staff know all the children really well. This allows them to understand the needs of your child.
All children are appointed a key worker and will be your child’s main carer. The key worker approach gives every child the reassurance to feel secure and cared for, helping them to become familiar with the nursery environment and to feel confident and safe within it. They will offer security, reassurance and continuity, and they will usually be the one to feed, change and soothe their key children. They are in the best position to understand their key child’s individual needs and to share information with the parents about their child’s day.
